A TT Superstock standing start lap of 130.304mph and two further 129mph efforts should have been good enough to afford Guy Martin and Tyco BMW their first podium of TT2015.
Unfortunately for the Northern Ireland based team, the battery on Martin’s BMW Motorrad S1000RR over-heated, and despite entering his pit at the end of lap two just 5.5 seconds off the lead – his machine initially refused to re-start.
The 35 seconds lost in the pits forced the Lincolnshire man down the running order and he eventually finished seventh with a respectable final lap of 129.040mph his Tyco BMW.
Martin said afterwards: “It was hard work out there today and even though we maybe didn’t quite have the perfect set-up, I made a strong start and the bike was flying; it was mint. 130mph from a standing start is a good enough first Superbike lap, never mind on a Stocker, and the second lap wasn’t much slower. We were in the running today, but what can you do. It’s just pure bad luck and only something the TT can throw at you.”
Team Manager Philip Neill said: “’Guy rode his heart out today and his early race lap times indicated his potential for the race. Unfortunately we suffered another niggly problem with an overheating battery, which left the bike difficult to start after the pit stop and that effectively ended Guy’s chances of a podium finish. After so much hard work from our team in preparation and the big effort from Guy it was a very disappointing day. On a positive note our BMW S1000RR has huge potential and Guy is extremely happy with the set-up on his Superbike machine, so we will re-group and hope for a positive end to TT2015 on Friday. It was good to see so many BMWs in the top ten today’”
